Finn Gehrsitz überzeugt mit solidem
ELMS-Debüt in Portugal
Der Deutsche kam in der LMP3-Kategorie auf Platz neun ins Ziel

Finn Gehrsitz hat am vergangenen Wochenende sein Debüt in der berühmten European Le Mans Series (ELMS) gegeben. Nach einer starken Saison in der LMP3-Kategorie des Michelin Le Mans Cups mit Phoenix Racing, durfte der Stuttgarter in der europäischen Königsklasse des Prototypen-Sports erste Runden drehen. Der AVL-Junior startete für das Team Eurointernational und teilte sich seinen Le-Mans-Prototypen-3 (LMP3) mit Langstrecken-Ass Mattia Drudi und dem Franzosen Antoine Doquin.
Für Gehrsitz war es der zweite Ausritt auf dem Autodromo Internacional de Algarve im portugiesischen Portimao. Der 4,7 Kilometer lange Kurs mit seinen 15 Kurven hat in den Jahren 2020 und 2021 den Großen Preis von Portugal in der Formel 1 beheimatet. Die ELMS-Saison 2021 gipfelte im Finale unter der Sonne von Portugal, die für Gehrsitz ein echter Glücksbringer war. Vor dem Rennstart hatte Audi-Werksfahrer und Gold-Pilot Drudi das Auto auf Startplatz elf gestellt.
Doquin fuhr den Start für das Team und wurde gleich zu Beginn in einen Unfall verwickelt, dem die Front-Flaps zum Opfer fielen. Außerdem gab es eine Durchfahrtsstrafe gegen den Franzosen, weshalb er das Auto auf Platz acht in der LMP3-Kategorie an Gehrsitz übergab. Dann schlug die Stunde des 17-jährigen Talents, der seine ersten Rennkilometer in der ELMS absolvierte.
Gehrsitz fuhr einen fehlerfreien Stints und brannte sehr schnelle Runden in den Asphalt von Portimao. Er machte im Laufe seines Einsatzes sogar eine Position gut und übergab dann das Auto an Drudi aus Italien. Das Team lag aufgrund der starken Leistung des Stuttgarters zu diesem Zeitpunkt auf einem starken siebten Platz in der LMP3-Kategorie. Anders als beim Michelin Le Mans Cup, in dem es zwei Klassen (LMP3 und GT3) gibt, starten in der ELMS drei Klassen: LMP2, LMP3, LMGTE. In Gehrsitz’ Wertung gingen insgesamt 17 LMP3-Autos an den Start.
Drudi fuhr das Auto letztlich auf Platz sieben ins Ziel und rundete damit einen guten Rennsonntag für Eurointernational ab. Drei Stunden nach der schwarz-weiß-karierten Flagge gab es dann aber einen kleinen Rückschlag: Drudi hatte aufgrund einer Rotphase drei Minuten zu lange im Auto verbracht – es gibt eine maximale Fahrzeit für die Toppiloten in der ELMS. Dementsprechend gab es eine 65-Sekunden-Strafe gegen das Team, die das Trio auf Platz neun des Klassements zurück spülte.
Für Gehrsitz stand aber die eigene starke Leistung in seinem Stint im Vordergrund, denn der 17-Jährige hat ein grandioses ELMS-Debüt gefeiert und wieder einmal auf sich aufmerksam gemacht.
“Es war ein großartiges Rennwochenende und eine einmalige Erfahrung, in der ELMS zu starten”, so Gehrsitz. “In dieser Klasse starten die besten europäischen Langstrecken-Piloten und ich habe gezeigt, dass ich in der LMP3-Kategorie gut mithalten kann. Es hat eine Menge Spaß gemacht, mit Eurointernational, Antoine und Mattia zusammenzuarbeiten und ich bin sehr stolz darauf, die Saison 2021 mit einem starken Ergebnis in der ELMS abgerundet zu haben. Das war ein wirklich großartiges Jahr für mich, in dem ich eine Menge gelernt habe. Ich freue mich schon jetzt auf die Saison 2022.”
Finn Gehrsitz impresses with solid ELMS debut in Portugal
The German finished ninth in the LMP3 category
Finn Gehrsitz made his debut in the famous European Le Mans Series (ELMS) last weekend. After a strong year in the LMP3 category of the Michelin Le Mans Cup with Phoenix Racing, the Stuttgart native was allowed to turn his first laps in the European premier class of prototype racing. The AVL junior started for Team Eurointernational and shared his Le Mans Prototype 3 (LMP3) with endurance ace Mattia Drudi and Frenchman Antoine Doquin.
For Gehrsitz, it was the second outing at the Autodromo Internacional de Algarve in Portimao, Portugal. The 4.7-kilometer track with its 15 turns was home to the Formula 1 Portuguese Grand Prix in 2020 and 2021. The 2021 ELMS season culminated in the finale under the Portuguese sun, which was a real lucky charm for Gehrsitz. Before the race start, Audi factory driver and gold driver Drudi had put the car on grid position eleven.
Doquin drove the start for the team and was involved in an accident right at the beginning, to which the front flaps fell victim. There was also a drive-through penalty against the Frenchman, which is why he handed the car over to Gehrsitz in eighth place in the LMP3 category. Then came the hour of the 17-year-old talent, who completed his first race kilometers in the ELMS.
Gehrsitz drove a flawless stint and burned very fast laps into the Portimao asphalt. He even made up one position during his stint and then handed the car over to Drudi from Italy. The team was in a strong seventh place in the LMP3 category at this point due to the convincing performance of the Stuttgart native. Unlike the Michelin Le Mans Cup, where there are two classes (LMP3 and GT3), three classes start in the ELMS: LMP2, LMP3, LMGTE. In Gehrsitz‘ classification, a total of 17 LMP3 cars competed.
Drudi ultimately drove the car to the finish in seventh place, rounding off a good race Sunday for Eurointernational. Three hours after the black-white-checkered flag, there was a minor setback: Drudi had spent three minutes too long in the car due to a red-flag phase – there is a maximum driving time for the top drivers in the ELMS. Accordingly, there was a 65-second penalty against the team, which washed the trio back to ninth place in the standings.
For Gehrsitz, however, the focus was on his own strong performance in his stint, as the 17-year-old celebrated a terrific ELMS debut and once again attracted attention.
„It was a great race weekend and a unique experience to compete in the ELMS,“ said Gehrsitz. „The best European endurance drivers compete in this class and I showed that I can keep up well in the LMP3 category. It’s been a lot of fun working with Eurointernational, Antoine and Mattia and I’m very proud to have rounded off the 2021 season with a strong result in the ELMS. This has been a really great year for me and I have learned a lot. I’m already looking forward to the 2022 season.“
