Finn Gehrsitz überzeugt im Rahmenprogramm
der legendären 24h von Le Mans
Der Stuttgarter schnupperte erste Le-Mans-Luft in der LMP3-Kategorie

Es ist das legendärste 24-Stunden-Rennen der Welt: Le Mans – und mitten drin war Finn Gehrsitz. Während die Vollprofis im Hauptrennen um die Krone kämpften, startete der Stuttgarter in der LMP3-Kategorie des Michelin Le Mans Cups. Der 16-Jährige schaffte es, zusammen mit Phoenix Racing und seinem Teamkollegen Hamza Owega in beiden Rennen eine gute Figur abzuliefern.
Doch alles der Reihe nach: Gehrsitz brannte im ersten Freien Training auf dem Circuit des 24 Heures, oder auch Circuit de la Sarthe genannt, starke Zeiten in den Asphalt und setzte das erste Ausrufezeichen des Rennwochenendes. Im zweiten Freien Training in der Nacht kam es dann aber zu einem unglücklichen Zwischenfall. Gehrsitz wurde von einem Konkurrenten im Heck getroffen, wodurch der Motor beschädigt wurde.
Am kommenden Morgen entschied das Phoenix-Team, den Motor zu tauschen, um Überraschungen in den Rennen zu vermeiden. Jedoch mussten Gehrsitz und Owega deshalb die beiden Qualifyings auslassen, weshalb das junge Duo in den beiden Rennen von Platz 44 starten musste. Ärgerlich war auch, dass Gehrsitz deshalb das komplette GT3-Feld vor sich hatte, ehe die Konkurrenz in der LMP3-Klasse folgte.
Der Youngster legte im ersten Rennen eine fulminante Aufholjagd hin und schaffte es, zusammen mit Owega auf Platz 15 vorzufahren. Im zweiten Lauf legte das Phoenix-Duo noch einen drauf und stürmte mit Platz neun in die Top 10. Obwohl sich der AVL-Youngster an der Sarthe mehr erhofft hatte, waren beide Läufe mehr als nur reine Schadensbegrenzung. Gehrsitz hat wieder einmal bewiesen, zu den schnellsten Piloten im Michelin Le Mans Cup zu gehören – auch auf einer legendären Strecke wie dem Circuit des 24 Heures.
“Natürlich haben wir uns im Qualifying die Pole-Position und in den Rennen jeweils ein Podium erhofft, aber leider gab es den Crash im Freien Training in der Nacht”, so Gehrsitz nach seinem ersten Einsatz in Le Mans. “Wir haben uns aber wieder zurückgekämpft und gezeigt, wozu wir imstande sind. Die Phoenix-Truppe und Hamza haben einen tollen Job gemacht und hart für den Erfolg gearbeitet. Auch wenn wir nicht auf das Podium gefahren sind, sind wir stolz auf die Leistung in Le Mans. Jetzt freue ich mich auf dem nächsten Lauf im belgischen Spa-Francorchamps.”
Gehrsitz und Owega liegen in ihrem Phoenix-LMP3 nach dem Rennwochenende in Le Mans auf Platz acht der Gesamtwertung. In den verbleibenden beiden Läufen in Spa-Francorchamps und im portugiesischen Portimao wollen beide Rennfahrer noch einmal angreifen, um Positionen im Klassement gutzumachen und endlich den längst überfälligen ersten Saisonsieg einzufahren. Der Lauf in Belgien findet am 18. September 2021 statt und wird live auf dem YouTube-Kanal des Michelin Le Mans Cup übertragen.
Close to the myth: Finn Gehrsitz impresses in the support program of the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans
The Stuttgart native got his first taste of Le Mans in the LMP3 category
It’s the world’s most legendary 24-hour race: Le Mans – and Finn Gehrsitz was right in the middle of it. While the pros were fighting for the crown in the main race, the Stuttgart native was competing in the LMP3 category of the Michelin Le Mans Cup. The 16-year-old managed to cut a good figure in both races together with Phoenix Racing and his teammate Hamza Owega.
But let’s take things one step at a time: Gehrsitz burned strong times into the asphalt in the first free practice session at the Circuit des 24 Heures, or Circuit de la Sarthe, and therefore started strong into the race weekend. In the second free practice session during the night, an unfortunate incident occurred. Gehrsitz was hit in the rear by a competitor, damaging the engine.
The next morning, the Phoenix team decided to change the engine to avoid any surprises in the races. However, Gehrsitz and Owega had to skip both qualifying sessions as a result, so the young duo had to start from 44th place in the two championship rounds. It was also a challenge for Gehrsitz that he had the entire GT3 field ahead of him before the competition in the LMP3 class followed.
The youngster showed a brilliant comeback in the first race and managed to move up to 15th place together with Owega. In the second race, the Phoenix duo went one better and stormed into the top 10 with ninth place. Although the AVL youngster had hoped for more at the Sarthe, both races were more than just pure damage limitation. Gehrsitz once again proved that he is one of the fastest drivers in the Michelin Le Mans Cup – even on a legendary track like the Circuit des 24 Heures.
„Of course we were hoping for pole position in qualifying and a podium in each of the races, but unfortunately there was a crash in free practice during the night,“ said Gehrsitz after his first outing at Le Mans. „However, we fought our way back and showed what we are capable of. The Phoenix squad and Hamza did a great job and worked hard for our success. Even though we didn’t finish on the podium, we’re proud of the performance at Le Mans. Now I’m looking forward to the next round in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium.“
Gehrsitz and Owega are eighth overall in their Phoenix LMP3 after the race weekend at Le Mans. In the remaining two rounds at Spa-Francorchamps and in Portimao, Portugal, both race drivers want to attack once again to make up positions in the standings and finally clinch the long overdue first win of the season. The race in Belgium will take place on September 18, 2021 and will be broadcast live on the Michelin Le Mans Cup YouTube channel.
