den Michelin Le Mans Cup

Am 17. April startet der Michelin Le Mans Cup im spanischen Barcelona in die Saison 2021. Erstmals mit dabei: Phoenix Racing. Den Ligier JS P320 #5 des Rennstalls aus Meuspath pilotieren Hamza Owega und Youngster Finn Gehrsitz. Die Mannschaft setzt außerdem gemeinsam mit WTM Racing einen zweiten LMP3-Boliden ein. Neben Leo Weiss greift Torsten Kratz ins Steuer der Startnummer 11.

Die Jagd nach Podestplätzen nimmt die Mannschaft aus der Eifel mit zwei Cup-Rookies in Angriff. Owega, dessen Bruder Jusuf zum ADAC GT Masters-Aufgebot von Phoenix Racing gehört, kann dafür allerhand Erfahrung im GT-Sport vorweisen. Mit Gehrsitz greift einer der jüngsten Piloten der Meisterschaftsgeschichte ins Lenkrad des Ligier im grau-schwarzen Stahlwerk-Design. Nach Erfolgen im Kartsport und ersten GT4-Rennen wechselt der 16-Jährige ins Prototypen-Cockpit.

Auch für Phoenix Racing ist es das Debüt im Michelin Le Mans Cup, jedoch keine Premiere im LMP-Bereich. Bereits zu Beginn des Jahres startete die Mannschaft in der Asian Le Mans Series und durfte im LMP2 gleich drei Podestplätze bejubeln. Ähnlich erfolgreich will Ernst Moser auch in der europäische Prototypen-Serie abschneiden. „Wir freuen uns sehr, nach unserem Engagement in der Asian Le Mans Series den nächsten Schritt zu gehen und nun auch in Europa anzutreten“, so der Teamchef. „Gemeinsam mit Ligier wollen wir uns auch hier gut präsentieren und Podestplätze einfahren. Dafür haben wir nicht nur eine schlagkräftige Mannschaft, sondern auch zwei vielversprechende Fahrer-Duos aufgestellt.“

In Kooperation mit WTM Racing bringt Phoenix Racing einen zweiten Boliden, einen Duqueine M30-D08, an den Start. Für das Team „WTM powered by Phoenix“ treten mit Weiss und Kratz zwei weitere Le Mans Cup-Debütanten an. Erfahrung im Prototypen-Bereich kann Weiss dennoch vorzeigen: Der Monschauer war bereits Teil des Asian Le Mans Series-Aufgebots der Meuspather. Kratz war bis dato erfolgreich im GT-Sport unterwegs. Im Rahmen des 24-Stunden-Rennens auf dem Nürburgring feierte er mehrere Klassensiege und sammelte Erfahrung in der ADAC GT4 Germany.

Los geht‘s am 17. April auf dem Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Im Rahmen der European Le Mans Series werden 2021 insgesamt fünf Rennen á 120 Minuten ausgetragen. Zusätzlich stehen zwei 55-minütige Läufen im Rahmenprogramm der legendären 24 Stunden von Le Mans im Kalender.

Michelin Le Mans Cup kicks off

The 2021 Michelin Le Mans Cup season begins in Barcelona on 17 April. Making its debut in the series is Phoenix Racing with the #5 Ligier JS P320 . The LMP3 prototype will be piloted by Hamza Owega and youngster Finn Gehrsitz. Phoenix Racing will also be entering a second LMP3 machine together with WTM Racing, with Leo Weiss and Torsten Kratz handling driving duties in the #11 car.

The hunt for podium finishes will soon be underway for the team from the Eifel mountains, armed with two Michelin Le Mans Cup rookies. Owega, whose brother Jusuf is part of the Phoenix Racing ADAC GT Masters effort in 2021, has a wealth of experience in GT racing. Gehrsitz shares the wheel of the #5 with the Stahlwerk livery with Owega and is one of the youngest drivers ever to enter the Michelin Le Mans Cup. The 16-year-old has enjoyed great success in karting and in GT4 racing but will be piloting prototype machinery for the first time.
Phoenix Racing will also be making its debut in the Michelin Le Mans Cup, but not in this form of racing. The Meuspath-based team made its first appearance in prototype racing earlier this year in the Asian Le Mans Series, and recorded three podiums in the LMP2 category in the process. Ernst Moser is eyeing up similar results in the European series. “We can’t wait to take the next step in our prototype journey with the Michelin Le Mans Cup in Europe,” the Team Principal said. “We will be looking to perform well here with Ligier and finish on the podium. Not only have we put together a strong team, we also have two promising driver line-ups.”
Phoenix Racing will also be entering a second car in the Michelin Le Mans Cup, this time in partnership with WTM Racing. The “WTM powered by Phoenix” squad will be racing a Duqueine M30-D08 with two further Michelin Le Mans Cup rookies in Leo Weiss and Torsten Kratz. Weiss has experience racing prototypes, with his most-recent appearance coming for Phoenix Racing as part of the Asian Le Mans Series programme. Kratz has made a name for himself in GT racing, securing multiple class victories at the Nürburgring 24 Hours and gathering valuable experience in ADAC GT4 Germany.
The season begins on 17 April at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. In support of the European Le Mans Series, the Michelin Le Mans Cup will host a total of five races each two hours in length. The highlight of the season comes at Le Mans, where two 55-minute races will take place in the week of the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans.
